Winston is a wether, an overweight wether. He was given to me along with a ewe, Moira. Moira is busy with her baby lamb now and does not have time to share with Winston, so he is lonely. Winston was a bottle baby from a farm just down the road from here, though he was given to me by a neighbour who is not that farmer. He started his life out as Waddles, maybe because he waddles a little when he walked. He is tame and friendly and wants human attention, so he is a great sheep to have.
Wether is the term for a castrated male sheep. Wethers are subject to obesity and kidney problems. Usually people forget about them and feed them the same as the rest of the flock, but that does not do them any favours. Winston is fat and out of shape and was grain fed way too much. Moira has slimmed down considerably with her twins, now just the ewe lamb because the male was sold as a bottle baby. But Winston, nope. He is a fat dude and when it is hot, he gets really hot. See?
