The Fat Ewe Farm Babydoll Sheep

The Fat Ewe Farm started with 6 Babydoll sheep from two different reputable breeders in 2013. The sheep were lambs, just 3 months old and cute as ever, though already chunky and sturdy. There was a coloured ram and a coloured ewe, plus 3 white ewes and a white ram. The idea was that the ram from one breeder could breed the ewes from the other breeder and vice versa. Unfortunately, one of the breeders did send along a ram who was related to the two ewe lambs and he was supposed to be unrelated. So, our first breeding was an oops. Only two of the ewes cycled and bred. One produced a ram lamb name Jackson, a very handsome friendly fellow, quite tall and more slender than his counterparts on the farm. The other coloured ewe gave an ewe lamb, Anna. The birth was very difficult and the ewe disowned the baby, so I raised her. She is still my baby, but this fall will be bred and become a mommy herself next year.

There are also some crosses available on the farm. The Jacob ewe lambs were bred to the Babydoll ram, Friar, and produced very sweet babies, Blanche, Zoe, and a ram lamb. The Icelandic/Barbados/Shetland ewe lambs were also bred to Friar and so was the Romanov ewe. She is a hair sheep so it will be interesting to see what kind of coat her little boy has. My goal with the sheep is improve the fleece. The Jacob cross lambs do not have the fleece I was hoping for. It is too loose and retains a lot of hay in it. My little Anna has a very open fleece too, though she is pure bred. I will breed two Romney ewe lambs to Friar this fall and have mini Romneys!

The sheep are born friendly and are quite a delight to have. I love them!  If you are interested in acquiring your own Babydolls or Babydoll crosses please contact me to be put on the waiting list.
