Blessings in Big White Fuzzy Packages

This is summer at The Fat Ewe Farm. It is tranquil though we are only 750 feet from two highways. The traffic noise is audible, especially when the wind comes from the west where the highways are, but the farm is recessed in a beautiful valley surrounded by tall poplar and spruce trees, very tall for this area, and rolling hills. The trickling creek is just behind the fence down at the bottom of the valley and there the grass is lush and green. The sheep have been freed from their pens because they ate all the grass and no fencers can be found. Rather than let them starve, they have been unleashed.

But the greatest blessing is not the tranquil valley, the gentle willows or even the lush greenery - it is the large white fuzzy creature with the sheep. Mike is a livestock guardian dog, bred for centuries to bond with his charges and stay with them, guarding them with his life. Mike is only a year old and is staying with his sheep more and more and that is so comforting to me. In this valley there are foxes, coyotes, bears, wolves, cougars and owls that love to prey on sheep and lambs, but with that dog there, even his presence, because he is huge, the sheep are very safe.

And that is the greatest blessing on this farm today, Mike the dog! Bless you Mikey. I love you.

A great picture of all the blessings. I am curious of a few things. Was Mike told or encouraged to follow his charges and why has Joe not bonded to these sheep? If you asked one of the girls (Jade or Jena) to join Mike to keep him company would they stay or wander back to the pack? I don't remember what you had told us but have the girls been spade or will they be breeding with Mike and Joe?
It seems that there is lots of animal love making on this farm. It would be a great place to come and learn about the birds and the bees.

Hello Moab,
Jade and Jenna are spayed yes, so not pups, but Harley is going to be a daddy in 5 months. He was just requested to sire some pups and will be picked up later today. Jade and Jenna do not stay with the sheep at all. They were terribly abused and kicked and beaten to make them stay in the sheep pen when they were babies and they do not go near the pens now. Joe does occasionally stay with the sheep but prefers to hang around the house as a farm dog, which is fine too, though it would have been better if he bonded with the sheep. I have not given up on him yet, though and encourage him to go home all the time. Sometimes he does and this morning he and Mike went out with the sheep. He does not stay, whereas Mike tends to, but maybe Joe will clue in soon. They are just a year old this July. Thanks for reading. Be well.
