Terribly contaminated with hay, so sad. This is a Blue Faced Leicester cross girl and her fleece is as soft and light as a cloud.
This Cotswold is Lissa and her fleece, like her mother's 43Y, is stunning.
Liza is a coloured Cotswold with amazing coloured curls.
This beautiful coat belongs to 43Y, one of the most spectacular Cotswolds I have ever seen, even in show photos. She only ever has a single lamb, and the lambs take several years to mature, but she is worth her weight in fluff!
Unfortunately, the hay nets do not keep the fleece clean, plus the keds, the little wingless flies that suck the blood of the sheep, are back with a vengence.I am not saying this fleece is a write off though. There are many curls that can be salvaged and used for felting projects or felted into scarves or as many ideas as the imagination can muster.
Can you imagine what these lovely locks would be like if the sheep had worn jackets all winter?43Y is a tall sheep and she still managed to get hay on her back, but if she was coated, her fleece would be pristine. I am going to do it differently this year, taking off the worst of the contaminated fleece and discarding it, then doing small bunches of curls in small packages for sale to the felting market. Hopefully, even though there is some vegetative matter, because it is not next to the skin, it will not affect the beautiful felted creations the artists make.
Shearing is set for March 19. I hope it does not rain because then the sheep cannot be sheared since I do not have anyplace to keep them dry. Otherwise, these locks will be for sale soon thereafter. Stay tuned.
