The beef tallow was yellowish from the grass fed cows, so it has lots of goodness on its own. Tallow soap made with just enough lye to saponify the fat, is a mild soap with a gentle cleansing ability. It is fine enough for babies and even delicate skin in its basic form. The soap is a light yellow, but will change to a much lighter yellow, almost white as it ages. Commercial tallow is white and the soap is bright white, but it already lacks the carotenes of the grass fed beef tallow.
The soap was cut into crude bars this morning and will be ground using the old Saladmaster salad maker, the most ideal tool for quickly shredding soap. The resultant shredded soap will then be made into a high quality milled soap with luscious additives such as Meyer Lemons, Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg spices and Cocoa Butter and chocolate.
It is minus 20 tonight with a windchill bringing the feel down to -37. What a great night to shred some of this tallow base soap and create an incredible soap from the Fat Ewe Farm! Want some?
